Unique Birthday Present
Ideas
Unique birthday presents are almost always better than expensive ones.
They come with the bonus of showing you were thinking hard about what
present to give – it wasn’t just something you picked up from a
display at your local big box store.
One sure-fire way to ensure your gift is unique is to make it. Nothing
is quite as thoughtful as something you made with your own two hands,
and the gift will definitely have your signature on it. You don’t even
have to be especially talented to make unique birthday presents. Just
put some time and humor into it and the receiver will be happy with
the gift. Some ideas for homemade gifts include:
-baked goods
-knitted hats, mittens, or scarves
-figures carved out of wood or soap
-clay ash trays, pencil holders, or bowls
-a papier mache piñata
-a story or comic book illustrated by hand or with computer graphics
-a photo album or scrapbook
-hand-embroidered handkerchiefs
-a mix CD or jump drive filled with favorite songs
-a bouquet of tissue paper flowers
-accent pillows
-a painting
-potholders
-coasters or trivets made out of ceramic tiles; or
-a fleece blanket.
Obviously the list could go on and on – think of any talent you have
or have ever had and brainstorm ways you could turn it into a present
for someone you love.
Store-bought presents can be unique, too. Try shopping at smaller,
local stores. If your friend or family member is out of town, they
will likely not have access to the same products you do. Try clothing
boutiques, antiques shops, stationary stores, gift shops, candy
stores, art galleries, or other stores in your downtown. Outdoor
markets are also great places to look for quirky accessories,
decorations, or tools made by local craftsmen.
But your shopping doesn’t have to be local to turn up a thoughtful
gift. One idea when shopping at any store is to buy things along a
certain theme. Some theme ideas include:
-movie night: a favorite DVD, popcorn, a blanket
-spa day: lotions, scrubs, face masks, nail polish
-poker night: cards, poker chips, snacks
-beading party: beads, string or twine, clasps or earring hardware
-automobile accessories: steering wheel cover, air freshener, license
plate frame
-game night: card game, board game, dice
-yoga: yoga mat, yoga video, yoga pants; or
-exercise: aerobics video, water bottle, sweatband.
Finally, the internet is a great place to find unusual items not
available in stores. It is an especially helpful resource if you’re
looking for something no longer sold most places. One idea is to use
internet auction sites or other online marketplaces to search for
toys, games, apparel, and other gifts from the decade in which your
friend grew up. If they were a child in the nineties, maybe you can
find a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Pokemon shirt or poster. If
they grew up in the sixties, maybe look for a DVD of the Andy Griffith
Show or Leave It to Beaver.
Whatever you end up choosing, your thoughtfulness in looking for
unique birthday presents will be appreciated!
